~Trans-Siberian Railway 2005~

~The 5th Day~

Feb. 10 2005 (Thu)
The 3rd day of the Trans-Siberian Railway

On a certain day, the conversation topic was exhausted. It was the third day indeed. There was no topic. It can't be helped because we talked a whole day. Although it's said that it's deafening when three women are together (in a Japanese proverb), the conversation wouldn't be continued even for three days even if three men are together. "Four eyes see more than two" had already expired. We had no choice. we repeated the topics. It's "New Game Plus" in video games.

The stops of today would be Tyumen, Ishim, Omsk, Barabinsk, Novosibirsk and Taiga stations.

Omsk
Vending Machine of Coca-Cola in Omsk What there are all over the world is Coca-Cola. There was no exception even if it was in Siberia. As the left photo, there was a vending machine on the platform of Omsk station.
This is a diesel locomotive in Russia. The locomotive pulled freight cars. It would be for unelectrified local lines. Omsk station

Although some people loaded coal into the train every time the train stopped at stations, they got angry when we tried to take pictures of it. No, it was more than angry. They got really angry. We couldn't understand what they said because it was in Russia even if they were really angry. But it would be "This isn't a show!" if we imagine from their atmosphere.

Incidentally, the train heater is the coal heating system. This is because we will die of cold if the blackout occuers in Siberia.

Time difference

We were concerned about the time difference because we had already travelled for two days from Moskow. The timetable of the trans-siberian railway in Russia was described in Moskow time. So we set our watches to Moskow time but the time difference to Moskow was three hours. It was already gloomy around 3 p.m. as the above photos. I hadn't expected I recognized the time difference when I travelled by train. I hadn't concerned time differences in Japan.

The restaurant car

Because the topics were exhausted and meals were poor recently, we went to a restaurant car for dinner.

Instant noodle This is an example of poor lunch. Today's lunch was an instant noodle of Nissin, a cup of instant soup, sour black bread and sausage(the first two were brought from Japan, and the second two were bought in Russia). Well, Japanese foods were more delicious.

Our car was the first class car. However, the restaurant car was very far. This would be the longest travel in the last couple of days:p. When we passed through the second class car on the way to the restaurant car, we got chewed out because a door leading to the deck wasn't closed properly. Although I can understand it was cold, why is the Russian quick to show anger? They may dislike oriental people.

With a new attitude, we visited the restaurant car. Fortunately, a waiter could speak English, so there might be no problem when we had a dinner. Because there were tens of meals on the menu, we couldn't help but start anticipating. Although the menu was, of course, written in Russian, we had already mastered how to read Russian. So we selected meals and ordered. However, the answer from the waiter was "we have only scallop (the soup) and solianca(the meat dish)". ...What? We wanted to ask "is this menu garnish?". But we had no choice if there was no menu except them. So we ordered scallop and beer. Then the scallop was a red soup including olive and many vegitables. It seemed to be spicy or hot but it was acid. Futhermore, the acid black bread was also served...

By the way, a Russian group including the waiter obviously ate dishes other than scallop or solianca. Is this the so-called double standard?

Because we were in Russia, we bought vodka from a refreshment trolley on the train. The alcohol content was less than 50%, and it seemed to be light for vodka. Well, it might be right strong for us because we wouldn't be able to drink if we bought a strong alcoholic drink containing 90% alcohol.
